11 year old Brinan, his older sister, Serena, are destined to be the future leaders of the Wolf Clan. Along with their friend, 10 year old Callom, who loves to invent ; they enjoy a happy and prosperous life in a cave situated in what is now the English Channel. Following their annual trip south to the Summer Gathering of all the Clans, Brinan obtains a wolf cub to rear and train; Serena discovers the sacred caves with ancient art work and starts training as a Shaman. On returning to their home cave, they learn new skills and make new discoveries over the long Winter months. In the Spring, their lives are turned upside down when disaster strikes and they are left alone to look after the younger children, five year old Matina, seven year old Ruban and baby Tomas.
